Not my traditional actor “first rehearsal” post, BUT as I continue to split my time in many capacities around the country, I am thrilled to announce my position as the Inclusion, Equity, Diversity & Access Coordinator at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities as well! Let’s go, “Kinky Boots!”
This space is one of my many Teaching Artist homes, and this additional, very important position means a lot to me. There are so many arts spaces that cringe at actually having to do the important work of DEI and I commend the Arvada Center for truly wanting to commit to making real, lasting change in their organization. It is equally dope that they have chosen to engage with me in helping lead that charge
I’ve been in so many spaces that instead of respecting my expertise, knowledge, real world experience & application, my time educating them and trying to provide solutions for helping elevate them to be better (all without paying me for this additional labor ) – instead dodged accountability, minimized experiences, deflected, gas lit, disrespected, and therefore further harmed myself, others in their spaces, and most importantly, missed out on serious growth opportunities that I greatly contributed to. They are always the ones that end up taking the L while I continue to thrive lol
But for real, I am so grateful for this opportunity to be used as a vessel and fierce advocate for fellow artists while also helping make an open and willing performing arts organization much more equitable and inclusive. Who better to do it. Let’s go.
